What Cameras do We Use?

“What cameras are you guys using?”. Quite possibly one of our most asked questions. In this blog post, I’m going to break down what our camera gear looks like, our favorite 35mm film stocks, hard drives, editing systems, and so much more.

Before diving into this blog post, I just want to note that you do not NEED the items and gear below in order to be a photographer. I started shooting with a GoPro3 and a Canon Rebel T6 ( you can find it on amazon for $300! ) and those cameras worked just fine. I am a firm believer that it is not the gear that makes you a photographer, it’s how you USE it. So take all things with a grain of salt, pick up your camera, and start shooting.

Our Digital Cameras

First things first, let’s talk about our go-to power house of a camera. The Canon R5. I’ve been shooting on this camera for just over a year now. We loved it so much, that Casey even picked one up. ( he found his used from a friend! ) He used to shoot with the Sony A7iii and I converted him to Canon.

We use this camera body for EVERYTHING. Commercial photo projects, Instagram posts, Youtube videos and so much more. It has incredible resolution and the speed is top notch. It’s also pretty rugged and has kept up with us on some pretty extreme adventures!

Now let’s talk lenses! Our current arsenal of lenses looks like this…

- Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L
- Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8
- Canon RF 16mm f/2.8

Our main powerhouse is the 24-70. This lens is ALWAYS on my camera and I rarely switch it up.

Our 35mm film cameras

Ahhh film. Something I got into about four years ago and have never stopped loving. Its ethereal colors and candid moments have had me head over heals since day one. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way.

My first film camera was Caseys old Pentax k1000 from his high school photo class. This was a great film camera to learn on as it was all manual and really threw you right into it.

After the Pentax, I got the Canon Elan 7N. I absolutely LOVE this camera because I can use my EF Canon lenses on this bad boy. Meaning I can use my 24-70mm f/2.8 and everything turns to butter. I don’t use this quite as frequently because it is a bit bulkier in nature, especially with the 24-70.

And that leaves us with my current partner in crime. The Olympus mju ii. I love this little point and shoot with my whole heart. I throw it in my pocket on backpacking trips, I throw it in my pocket while I ski, and I throw it in my pocket on sunset walks. It’s so easy to use and has not failed me once!

And of course, our favorite 35mm film stocks. I will forever love Portra 400. But I also love…
Ektar 100, Cinestill 400D, Kodak Gold, and Portra 800.Keep an eye out for a blog post that will go over and compare all of the film stocks above.

Editing softwares, hard drives, SD cards and more

And now for the fun stuff! If I’m being honest, this is the stuff that overwhelms me the most when it comes to photo and video. And honestly, I still don’t know if I’m doing things the most efficiently. But regardless, here’s a quick recap on all the items listed above.

editing

Editing is one of my favorite parts of digital photography. It’s where your creativity can really shine and you can edit the image to how you envisioned it in the moment. We use Adobe Lightroom on our desktops for all things digital photo editing. It’s all I’ve been using and it’s all I really know.

Over the past few years, I’ve also started using Photo Mechanic to cull through images, organize files by name / date, and back things up onto hard drives. If you haven’t heard of it, I highly recommend checking it out if you want to have a quick workflow!

In terms of editing iPhone images, I always use VSCO. I’ve been a VSCO girl for a very very long time. The presets they have on there are incredible and it’s just so easy to use! T I edit all of my IG stories in VSCO.

Hard drives + SD cards

Over the years, I really haven’t experimented with too may hard drives + SD cards. I’ve always used what I have and it’s worked, so I haven’t switched it up.

I really don’t have too much knowledge when it comes to these sorts of things, but here is what we use for all our digital storage needs!

And there you have it folks. A brief breakdown on our camera gear. If there is anything we missed, let us know and we can sort it out. I also wanted to note that some of these links are affiliate links! By purchasing through these links, we receive a little kickback. All the support means the world.

Like I said in the beginning, these are just recommendations. If you have camera gear that works for you, keep using it! Even if it’s your iPhone or an old GoPro.

Over & out, Far Out Stoke.
